Description: The Southern Magnolia is native to moist wooded areas in the southeastern United States. It is easily recognized by its large, dark green, glossy, evergreen leaves, as well as the large, striking, fragrant, white flowers that can approach nearly a foot in diameter. The flowers bloom in late spring, often with occasional additional blooms throughout the summer. The cone-like fruiting clusters mature in late summer to early fall, releasing individual orange-red seeds from each carpel. Considered fully hardy to zone 7, in New Jersey they are marginally hardy and sometimes experience more cold damage over the winter than throughout most of their growing range.
