Description: Smoketree, sometimes called Smokebush, is an upright, multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub. Although it produces very small, insignificant yellow flowers in the spring, the common name actually comes from the spent flowers, with elongated stalks bearing long, feathery hairs, which appear as fluffy, smoke-like puffs that turn pink in the summer. Many have bluish-green rounded leaves, although selections and cultivars are available with bronze-red, deep purple, and even bright chartreuse-green leaves. Fall color is variable, but can exhibit yellows, oranges, reds and purples.
