Description: Hackberry is a medium to large sized deciduous tree with upright branching and a rounded canopy. The mature gray bark shows corky ridges and bumpy, warty textures. Insignificant spring flowers produce an often abundant amount of round, fleshy, deep purple fruits that are attractive to birds and a variety of wildlife. Unremarkable yellow color in fall. Robust tree that is adaptable to a wide range of soils. Good lawn, street, or shade tree, although fruits and seeds can be messy.
