  • Spring Tree Tour

    Friends of Fairview is pleased to announce its annual spring tree tour. Late April is a beautiful time to walk the grounds, when many of our trees are in bloom amidst the emerging spring greenery. Attendance for the 2:00 tour is limited to 40 individuals, so mark your calendar to register.

    The tour is led by Dr. Tom Ombrello, Professor of Biology at Union College. Dr. Ombrello is an expert on all aspects of trees and is also able to share many anecdotal stories regarding history, geology, and local lore. His expertise has aided Fairview Cemetery in acquiring accreditation as a level ll arboretum, as well as in the cataloguing and selection of species on the grounds. 

    Wear comfortable walking shoes, as the grounds are hilly. In case of rain, this event will be cancelled.

  • History of NJ Cemeteries Lecture

    May 3, 2026  2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

    Richard Veit, Ph.D., Provost and Professor at Monmouth University, and Mark Nonestied, Historian for Middlesex County and a Division Head with the Middlesex County Division of History and Historic Preservation, are experienced and knowledgeable historians in their field. Together, they co-authored New Jersey Cemeteries and Tombstones: History in the Landscape, published by Rutgers University Press, and each have written numerous articles and given many lectures on the topic. We are delighted to host Dr. Veit for this special event, during which he will provide background and historical information on the development and growth of cemeteries in NJ.

  • Spring Birding Walk

    Fairview Cemetery, 1100 E Broad St, Westfield, NJ 07090, USA

    The month of May is a busy time for nesting birds, when a variety of species are present in the area. Friends of Fairview is pleased to invite the public to observe some of these species at an early morning bird watching walk. Join us to discover the thrilling sounds of songbirds in a pastoral setting of lush, spring greenery and blossoms. Attendance is limited to 30 individuals.

    The tour will be led by Pete Axelrod, a lifelong naturalist. With a background in Wildlife Biology, Pete has been involved with birding adventures in New Jersey including volunteer work with the Great Swamp, the NJ Audubon Society, and the Raptor Trust. Pete also worked for Wild Birds Unlimited in Scotch Plains, giving lectures and instructions on the value of backyard birding.

    Bring binoculars and wear walking shoes, as the grounds are hilly. In case of rain, this event will be cancelled.
