Historic Tree Lecture

Friends of Fairview is proud to host the first of our 2026 lecture series. This initial lecture will highlight the Union County Historic Tree Grove located on the campus of Union College, Cranford.

The trees in this historic grove are the witness to important historical events in American history and remain an important legacy to the past. Approximately 75 historic trees grown from seeds and clonal cuttings are planted in the grove, spanning through history from George Washington to 9/11.

The lecturer and project manager of the historic grove is Dr. Tom Ombrello, Senior Professor of Biology at Union College. This lecture will explore how the trees were selected, grown, and incorporated into the campus of Union College, and will be accompanied by an illustrated presentation. Several of these trees are noteworthy and will be covered in detail.

The lecture is scheduled for Sunday, March 15th, at 2:00 pm in the Fairview Cemetery Conference room and will last approximately 90 minutes. The event is free to the public, but you must register below in order to attend. Indoor seating is limited to 40 people, and no unregistered guests will be admitted.
