Clarence Smith

1897–1978

Clarence Smith lived most of his life in Westfield and was interested in aviation his entire life. As a young man he became commander of a local squadron of the Civil Air Defense and was the radio man on duty when the first airmail was delivered to Westfield. He later became a mail carrier after his career with the Civil Air Defense ended. He had a short career in politics, becoming councilman of the second ward of Westfield. He was married and the father of two children, a son and a daughter. He was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church of Westfield. He was also one of the first thousand members of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.
