Hortense and Ada Budell were sisters and well-known artists. In 1926 they established an art school in a remodeled barn at the rear of the family property off Fourth Avenue in Westfield, New Jersey. Area children and adults attended classes here until 1960. Hortense taught art in New York and Morristown as well as the adult schools in both Westfield and Cranford. Her carefully conceived landscapes resulted from years of intense and varied study. Ada specialized in portraits and painted panels in Trenton for the State of New Jersey and illustrated many children’s books. Both Hortense and Ada received numerous awards, and their paintings were exhibited throughout the United States. The works of Hortense are still available for sale online.
