John M. C. Marsh
1845–1913
John Marsh was born in 1845 in the old Clark homestead near the Westfield Inn, when it was located on East Broad Street. He was elected Constable in 1863, serving for 40 years, and served as Town Assessor for 33 years, as well. Marsh was also the Commissioner of Deeds. A notice in the Westfield Leader from 1912 announced that he celebrated his 70th birthday on February 25th. He was described as the “ubiquitous guardian of the law.” Among other positions, he also served as a Court Constable, a member of Election Board, a Teller at all school board elections, and interestingly, he helped secure right of way for a trolley system through downtown Westfield. He was also an active member of the Fire Department. His grave bears no headstone.
