James Ferris’ first residence, called the old house, was located at 112 Ferris Place. The home had been moved to this location from north of Broad, east of Prospect. In 1858 he bought a large tract of land on Broad Street east of the Methodist Church on which he built a handsome residence. The triangular area opposite his house was part of his purchase, as was the original Arcanum Building on the opposite corner. His activities in the Methodist Church and on various Town improvements were many.
