Virginia Apgar

Dr. Virginia Apgar was a physician, anesthesiologist, and medical researcher. She is best known as the inventor of the Apgar Score, a way to quickly assess the health of a newborn child immediately after birth in order to combat infant mortality. She was a leader in the fields of anesthesiology and teratology, and introduced obstetrical considerations to the field of neonatology. She was raised in Westfield, New Jersey, graduating from Westfield High School in 1925. Dr. Apgar was the youngest of three children and she went to Mount Holyoke College and medical school at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.
