Description: Japanese Red Pine is a very common tree in Japan, although ‘Umbraculifera’ (known as Tanyosho Japanese Red Pine) is a less-common, slow-growing dwarf cultivar. As the cultivar name suggests, it matures into a somewhat umbrella-like shape, with upright, spreading branches. Specimens are often multi-trunked at the base. As with all Japanese Red Pine, ‘Umbraculifera’ has attractive orange-red bark and produces an abundance of small cones. Needles may yellow in winter. Prefers well-drained soils in full sun, but will tolerate light afternoon shade, particularly in hot summer climates.
