Description: Chinese Witch Hazel is a deciduous shrub with a rounded shape. Of the five recognized species, Hamamelis mollis has the most fragrant flowers. It is an easy-to-grow plant in average, well-drained soils of consistent moisture, but leaves may scorch during summer drought. Will tolerate some shade, but blooms best in full sun. Prune in spring after flowering to control shape and size. Root suckers should also be removed to prevent spreading and preserve shape, and particularly if a specific cultivar is planted, as they are often grafted and root suckers may not display the same characteristics if allowed to mature. May experience flower bud damage in USDA Zone 5, or in particularly cold, windy, exposed locations.
