Description: Callery Pear (often erroneously called ‘Bradford’ Pear, which is in fact a specific cultivar of Callery Pear) is native to China and Taiwan. This specimen, ‘Chanticleer,’ is a selected cultivar considered to be one of the best currently available. It is narrower in habit than the general species, sometimes appearing almost columnar. It is valued for its early, prolific spring bloom of white flower clusters, although many report them to have a somewhat unpleasant fragrance. Excellent, glossy green foliage turns bronzy red or purple in fall. The small, inedible, green fruits are of little interest except to wildlife. Limb breakage or splitting can occur in strong winds or under heavy snow or ice, but ‘Chanticleer’ is much stronger than some other cultivars, including the well-known ‘Bradford’. No serious disease or insect problems.
