Description: Widely known by their Latin name “Ginkgo,” the Maidenhair Tree—a name derived from the resemblance of its characteristic fan-shaped leaves to those of a Maidenhair Fern—is a large, deciduous tree that is thought of as a living fossil. It is the only surviving member of a group of ancient plants believed to have inhabited the earth up to 150 million years ago. Ginkgos can be either male or female, though male trees are typically sold in commerce. The female trees produce small fruits, that although eaten in some cultures, tend to give off an unpleasant aroma when ripe and can make a mess on sidewalks and walkways. ‘Magyar’ is a male plant with a narrow upright form. Leaves turn a showy golden yellow in fall. No serious insect or disease problems.
