Description: ‘Allee’ Chinese Elm is a medium-large size deciduous tree with an elegant vase shape, fluted trunk, and characteristic exfoliating bark, which produce gray, cream, green, orange, and/or brown patches on the trunk and limbs. Insignificant flowers in summer produce flat, circular samaras with a papery wing surrounding each single seed. It resembles American elm (Ulmus americana), but with reportedly excellent resistance to Dutch Elm Disease, which has decimated our native populations. Also resistant to elm leaf beetle, leaf scorch, dieback, and cold winter weather. Excellent shade tree.
