Description: The ‘Columnaris’ Sargent Cherry cultivar is a graceful ornamental flowering cherry tree with narrow, vase-shaped branching that is more upright than standard Sargent Cherries. The species, native to Japan and Korea, is well noted for its bountiful clusters of pink flowers in spring, attractive foliage, and striking red fall color. Flowers are followed by small, dark purple-black cherries that are bitter and inedible. Reddish-brown bark is shiny. Sargent Cherry has good resistance to many pests, although cherries as a group have a large number of insect and disease pests. Good small shade tree or specimen plant.
